The arrival
Siena, on that day, is not the city you know from postcards. The streets are rivers of colored scarves, drums echo through the alleys, every contrada sings its own story. You walk through all of it — and then a great door closes behind you: the palazzo is yours.
The wait
In the halls, time slows down. A buffet of Tuscan excellence — pecorino from Pienza, cured meats of the cinta senese, wines from the hills you can see on the horizon. Some lean out of the windows, some simply listen: there are those who have lived the Palio for seventy years, and they tell it the way one shares a family secret.
The Procession
Six hundred figures in Renaissance costume enter the square to the beat of the drums. The flag-throws rise toward your windows, the Carroccio carries the Drappellone that someone will soon win. It lasts two hours — and from where you stand, every detail is yours.
The Race.
The square falls silent. Ten horses at the rope.
